Chives
Scientific name: Allium schoenoprasum
Family: Leek (Alliaceae)
Despite being commonly grown and used as a culinary herb, chives are poisonous to many animals. This sturdy plant is native to Eurasia and can withstand almost any weather. Its essential oils give it its distinctive flavour, which only develops after chopping the herb. Chives contain important vitamins of the B group, as well as vitamin C and valuable minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Its pink to purple edible flowers also make chives a beautiful ornamental plant.
